PowerChina Helps Solve Mauritania’s Drinking Water Challenge
The Mauritania Beninaji raw water pretreatment project, undertaken by PowerChina Harbour Co., Ltd., has passed acceptance and was reported by Xinhua News Agency and the overseas edition of People’s Daily.
About 80% of Mauritania’s territory is desert. The capital, home to more than 1.5 million people, relies on the Senegal River for its water supply, but during the rainy season the river’s high turbidity leads to water shortages. The project has a daily treatment capacity of 255,000 cubic meters, was completed in seven months, and includes six sets of high-rate sedimentation tanks. The team overcame extreme heat and sandstorms, using corrosion-resistant equipment to ensure construction quality.
After commissioning, the stability of the capital’s water supply increased to 90%, easing summer water shortages. The project created 80 local jobs, reduced waterborne diseases, and benefited 1.5 million people. It is a key achievement of China–Mauritania Belt and Road cooperation and provides a model for treating high-turbidity water in Africa.
