PowerChina: 69 Years of Dedicated Work in Tibet, Painting a New Development Landscape on the Plateau
On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the Tibet Autonomous Region in 2025, PowerChina reviewed its 69-year journey of assisting Tibet: starting with the hydropower resource survey launched in 1956, it has participated in Tibet’s development with wholehearted dedication, investing a total of more than RMB 2.9 billion in 12 projects in Tibet, helping the region move from poverty to prosperity.
In energy development, PowerChina overcame high-altitude challenges, completing the world’s highest-elevation pumped-storage power station at Yamdrok Lake in 1998, and building Zangmu Hydropower Station—the first large-scale power station on the Yarlung Zangbo River—in 2010. In recent years, it has also developed new energy projects such as the “pasture-solar complementary” project in Mozhugongka, Lhasa, and promoted the Qamdo clean energy equipment manufacturing base, forming an industrial chain for green development.
In the livelihood sector, PowerChina donated RMB 50 million to rebuild post-disaster homes in Dinggyê County and Lhatse County, and completed Shiquanhe and Yareng hydropower stations, addressing power supply challenges in Ali and Medog. In terms of ecological protection, Zangmu Hydropower Station built fish passages to safeguard the ecosystem; the Pai–Mo Highway has created an ecological corridor; and the Lhasa River management project has restored the aquatic ecosystem—protecting the plateau’s pristine land through green practices. Looking ahead, PowerChina will continue to inject momentum into Tibet’s long-term stability and high-quality development.
